How to Review Your Deliverability Inside Klaviyo

6 Aug 2026 · 4 min read

Deliverability Is a Function of Segmentation, Not Account Health

When you open the Deliverability tab in Klaviyo, the first thing you see is an aggregated score. Klaviyo calculates this number by pooling your open rates, click rates, bounce rates, unsubscribe rates, and spam complaint rates across every message you send. Most brand owners look at a declining score and assume their entire account is broken.

That is a mistake.

Deliverability is not an inherent measure of your account health as a whole. It is a direct function of the specific segments you choose to mail. If your automated flows are hitting highly targeted, active profiles, those emails will maintain strong metrics (often seeing open rates north of 50% or 60%). But if you send regular campaign blasts to your entire unsegmented database getting a 20% open rate, you drag down your account-wide aggregate score. Your flows are fine, but your campaign sending habits are hiding that reality.

Why Industry Benchmarks in Klaviyo Lie

Inside the deliverability reporting screens, Klaviyo compares your performance against peer benchmarks in your industry. I ignore those suggested target numbers entirely. Benchmark against yourself month-on-month instead.

Klaviyo's industry averages pull data across hundreds of brands with completely different catalog structures, price points, and sending cadences. Comparing your boutique brand against a generic industry bracket does not give you actionable insight. Aiming for arbitrary numbers distracts you from the real goal: continuously refining your own trends.

Reading Your Flow Performance in Context

When you analyse deliverability by message type, context is everything. Klaviyo will flag certain flows as underperforming simply because their raw numbers fall below a generic threshold, even when the flow is doing exactly what it was designed to do.

Here is how I evaluate three common automation examples:

  • Sunset flow: This flow will show abysmal open and click rates. That is expected. It is explicitly sent to unengaged profiles as a last-ditch effort before suppression. Low engagement here is normal, not a crisis.

  • Delivered order flow: If an order confirmation or delivery update flow shows average open rates around 35%, that is an issue. Transactional and shipping updates should easily clear 60% opens. Because Klaviyo benchmarks this against general marketing emails, it might give you a green pass when you actually need to fix copy and sender clarity.

  • Post-purchase thank you: We often build plain-text post-purchase emails from the founder with zero outbound links, purely designed to build brand goodwill. Klaviyo might flag the click rate as poor, but the email has nowhere to click. Context matters.

Diagnosing Bounce Rates and ISP Issues

If your bounce rate consistently creeps above 1%, you need to investigate immediately. A high bounce rate generally indicates that you are collecting fake email addresses on sign-up forms, or you have let inactive profiles sit on your main list for too long.

Inside the bounce reports, drill down into your provider breakdown. You will see specific failure reasons such as invalid email addresses or unavailable mailboxes across providers like Gmail, Yahoo, and Outlook. Occasionally, sudden spikes are external. For example, when Verizon or Yahoo updates filtering rules or experiences an outage, bounce numbers can surge temporarily across those specific domains without reflecting poor sending practices on your end.

To protect your domain immediately, add a global filter to both campaigns and active flows: what somebody has done > Bounced Email zero times in the last 30 days. Suppressing recent hard and soft bounces keeps your reputation intact while you clean your acquisition sources.

Using Deliverability Data to Set Your Campaign Segmentation

The single most powerful lever you have to fix deliverability is tightening your campaign segmentation window. When your deliverability score drops, your audience criteria must contract immediately.

If your metrics are suffering, stop mailing your 90-day engaged list. Instead, build a tight 30-day engaged segment using conditions like:

  • Opened email at least once in the last 30 days, OR

  • Clicked email at least once in the last 30 days, OR

  • Placed order at least once in the last 30 days, OR

  • Subscribed to list in the last 30 days.

Mailing this tight group will immediately push your campaign open rates up. As mailbox providers see your recipients actively engaging, your inbox placement improves. Once your deliverability score stabilises, you can widen the window to 60 days, expanding your reach from say 24,000 profiles back up to 29,000 profiles safely. The rule is simple: poor deliverability demands tight segments; healthy deliverability earns wider reach.

Final Thoughts

Klaviyo's deliverability tab should not cause panic. Treat it as an operational dashboard that tells you when to contract your campaign audience and when it is safe to expand. Match your metrics with the context of each message, keep hard bounces under 1%, and adjust your engaged segments accordingly.
