How to Set Up and Customise Klaviyo Preference Pages

7 Sept 2026 · 4 min read

What the Klaviyo Preference Centre Actually Does

At its simplest form, a preference centre is a set of hosted web pages that gives your subscribers control over their relationship with your brand. Instead of forcing someone into a binary choice between receiving every single campaign or leaving entirely, it creates a practical middle ground.

Subscribers can update their personal details, pick the exact product categories they care about, or simply tell you to email them less often. If they still decide to walk away, they have a clean and compliant route out.

Think about it from your subscriber's point of view. They might like your products, but receiving 4 emails a week during a major promo run can feel overwhelming. If their only option is the unsubscribe button, they will click it and leave for good. Giving them the option to dial back frequency keeps them on your list, preserves your deliverability, and protects your sender reputation.

A functional preference centre is also a baseline requirement for international compliance, covering CAN-SPAM, GDPR, and the New Zealand Spam Act. It is not optional in my books.

The Four Core Consent Pages in Klaviyo

Inside Klaviyo, preference settings live under what the platform calls consent pages. You can find them under your main account settings or directly within any individual list under the Consent Pages tab.

There are four distinct pages you need to know about:

  • Preference page: The page where existing subscribers manage their details, content interests, and email cadence.
  • Subscribe page: A standalone hosted sign-up form that Klaviyo creates automatically for your list.
  • Email confirmation page: The landing page displayed when someone clicks the confirmation link in a double opt-in setup.
  • Email unsubscribe page: The page displayed when someone clicks the unsubscribe tag in your email footer.

Each page serves a specific step in the subscriber lifecycle. Leaving them completely untouched on standard defaults is a missed opportunity to retain subscribers.

Customising Your Preference Page to Collect Zero-Party Data

The standard preference page out of the box is very basic. It usually shows just email address, first name, and last name. That works, but it does nothing to help you segment your audience more effectively.

You can drag in new form blocks to gather actionable zero-party data. I recommend using radio buttons or multi-checkbox blocks rather than open text fields. Free text inputs create messy data that is nearly impossible to segment cleanly later on.

For instance, you can ask subscribers to pick their primary product interest (such as womenswear, menswear, or accessories). When a subscriber ticks a box, Klaviyo updates a custom profile property on their profile immediately. You can then use those properties to build trigger splits in your flows or target specific campaign sends to people who actually asked for that content.

Hosted Subscribe Pages and Why You Should Use Single Opt-In

Klaviyo generates a hosted subscribe page URL for every list you create. This gives you a clean standalone sign-up link you can drop into social bios, partner campaigns, or customer service workflows without building a dedicated landing page on your website.

How this page behaves depends entirely on your list consent settings. By default, Klaviyo often turns on double opt-in, which forces new subscribers to open a confirmation email and click a link before they are added to your list.

Turn double opt-in off. In almost every standard ecommerce scenario, double opt-in simply adds friction and kills list growth. You lose roughly 20% to 30% of genuine sign-ups who simply forget to check their inbox or whose confirmation email lands in spam. Go to your list settings, open the Consent tab, and switch the setting to single opt-in.

Managing Send Frequency on the Unsubscribe Page

The unsubscribe page is your last opportunity to prevent a subscriber from leaving completely. Klaviyo includes a default link at the bottom of the unsubscribe screen that redirects users back to your preference page.

This is where you can offer a frequency downsell. Add a custom profile property question to your preference centre asking: "How often would you like to hear from us?"

Provide three simple choices:

  • As often as you like (standard cadence)
  • Once per week (weekly recap)
  • Once per month (major announcements only)

Once you capture that property, you can build segments around it. If someone selects the once-per-month option, create an exclusion rule in your main campaign segments to suppress them from your standard weekly sends. They stay on your list, they remain engaged on their own terms, and you avoid an outright unsubscribe.

List-Specific Versus Default Consent Pages

Klaviyo lets you edit global default consent pages across your entire account, but you can also customise pages on an individual list level. If a list does not have custom pages configured, Klaviyo falls back to your global account defaults automatically.

Customising consent pages per list is useful if you run distinct subscriber acquisition channels. For example, if you run a dedicated VIP list or a targeted giveaway campaign, you can tailor the copy, branding, and questions specifically to the context of that promotion.

Most subscribers will not visit your preference centre every day. However, making sure these pages are branded, functional, and connected to meaningful profile properties ensures you capture valuable data every time someone does.

Final Thoughts

Your preference centre should not be an afterthought. Giving subscribers the ability to pick their email frequency and content preferences protects your sender reputation and keeps your lists clean. Switch your lists to single opt-in, add simple frequency options, and let your audience tell you how they want to hear from you.
