Email Marketing Pricing: Understanding How Much Email Marketing Costs

5 Dec 2024 · 14 min read

How Much Does Email Marketing Cost On Average? Email Marketing Services Pricing

When you’re considering email marketing pricing, you’ll find several different pricing models used by agencies and platforms. These typically fall into four main categories:

Cost Per Hour

Freelancers and some agencies charge hourly rates for email marketing services. You’ll typically see rates ranging from $15 to $200 per hour. Independent freelancers often charge between $15-$75 per hour, while established agency professionals may charge $75-$250 per hour depending on their expertise and location.

In certain countries, states, or territories, email marketers may charge at the higher end of this range due to the specialized nature of the market and the higher cost of services in the region. More often than not, if you are paying hourly, you are more than likely looking for someone to be part of your internal team. The higher end of the price range typically means you are bringing someone on more as a strategist, and on the lower end, you are probably looking more at say, an email designer/builder.

Cost Per Project

Project-based pricing works well for specific, one-time email marketing needs. A typical email marketing project might include setting up automation flows, creating templates, or running a specific campaign. Project costs usually range from $1,000 to $5,000, depending on complexity.

For example, setting up a basic welcome series might cost $1,000, while creating a complete customer journey with multiple automated sequences could run $5,000 or more. Personally, if you are doing bigger pieces of work, say an entire flow build-out, you will need multiple people doing different roles, meaning the project fee typically works better than, say, hourly. Also, if you are looking to save time and do less management, I would recommend hiring someone who is willing to do the project on a project fee and can bring multiple team members into the picture.

Monthly Retainer

Monthly retainers are common for ongoing email marketing management. These typically range from $500 to $10,000 per month, with most small to medium-sized businesses spending between $2,500 and $5,000 monthly.

Your retainer cost depends on factors like:

  • Size of your email list
  • Number of campaigns you send
  • Level of personalization needed
  • Amount of content creation required
  • Complexity of automation and segmentation
  • Level of reporting and integration with the ad team

Revenue Share

Some email marketing agencies work on a revenue share model, taking a percentage of the revenue generated through email campaigns. This typically ranges from 5-20% of email-attributed revenue. While this model aligns agency incentives with your success, it can be complex to track and attribute revenue accurately. Personally, I would try and steer clear of this model as attribution is hard to pin down with email at best and impossible at worst. The better way to incentivise an agency is to come up with a series of KPI’s and come up with rewards based on those KPI’s rather than giving away a percentage of your revenue.

Email Marketing Agency Pricing vs Email Marketing Platform Costs

Understanding the difference between agency costs and platform costs helps you budget effectively. Here’s what you need to know about both options:

Platform Costs

Popular email marketing platforms price their services based on subscriber count and features:

mailchimp pricing

Mailchimp:

  • Free: Up to 2,000 contacts
  • Essentials: Starting at $13/month for 500 contacts
  • Standard: Starting at $20/month for 500 contacts
  • Premium: Starting at $350/month

Klaviyo:

  • Free: Up to 250 contacts
  • Paid plans: Starting at $20/month for up to 500 contacts
  • Scale with list size: $45/month for 1,000 contacts, $150/month for 5,000 contacts

Omnisend:

  • Free: Up to 250 contacts
  • Standard: Starting at $16/month for 500 contacts
  • Pro: Starting at $99/month for 500 contacts

If you’d like to learn more about the differences between some of these platforms, we did a complete side-by-side review of Mailchimp vs Klaviyo. Read it here!

In my opinion, if you are an e-commerce business, the best option is to go for Klaviyo simply based on it’s functionality rather than its pricing.

Agency Costs

Agency pricing typically includes both strategy and execution:

Small Agencies:

  • Basic Package: $1,000-2,500/month
  • Standard Package: $2,500-5,000/month
  • Premium Package: $5,000-10,000/month

Enterprise Agencies:

  • Basic Package: $5,000-10,000/month
  • Standard Package: $10,000-20,000/month
  • Premium Package: $20,000+/month

Key Factors That Influence Email Marketing Agency Pricing

Your email marketing pricing will vary based on several key factors that agencies consider when setting their rates.

email list

Your Number of Subscribers

List size fundamentally shapes your email marketing costs. A list of 5,000 subscribers might cost $50-100 monthly in platform fees alone, while lists over 100,000 subscribers often exceed $500 monthly just for sending capability. But raw numbers tell only part of the story.

As your list grows, you’ll need more sophisticated tools and approaches. Lists over 10,000 subscribers typically require advanced segmentation strategies to maintain engagement.

You might pay $200-500 monthly for segmentation tools alone. Deliverability monitoring becomes essential with larger lists too, a poor sender reputation can cost you thousands in lost revenue.

Many agencies include deliverability monitoring in their service packages, typically adding $300-700 monthly to your email marketing pricing.

Campaign Complexity

Simple newsletters with basic personalization might cost $200-400 per campaign to create and send. But when you add dynamic content, sophisticated personalization, and custom coding, that same email campaign could cost $800-1,500 or more.

Consider an e-commerce welcome series. A basic three-email sequence might cost $1,000-2,000 to set up. Add product recommendations, purchase history integration, and dynamic pricing, and that same sequence could cost $3,000-5,000. The complexity multiplies with each additional feature or integration point.

Here are typical complexity factors that influence pricing:

  • Multi-step automation workflows
  • Dynamic content rules
  • Custom API integrations
  • Advanced personalization logic
  • Mobile-specific formatting
  • Interactive elements

Volume of Marketing Emails

Your sending volume impacts both platform and agency costs. Most email platforms use tiered pricing based on send volume. For example:

  • 0-10,000 emails: $50/month
  • 10,000-50,000 emails: $150/month
  • 50,000-100,000 emails: $300/month

Agency costs scale with volume too. Creating content for daily sends requires more resources than monthly newsletters. Many agencies price their services using hybrid models that consider both subscriber count and sending frequency.

Features

Basic email marketing features come standard with most platforms and agency packages. These typically include:

  • Simple templates
  • Basic list management
  • Standard reporting
  • Basic automation rules

Advanced features add significantly to your email marketing pricing. A/B testing capabilities might add $100-200 monthly to platform costs. Dynamic content tools often cost $200-500 monthly extra. Custom integrations can run $1,000-5,000 for initial setup plus ongoing maintenance fees.

Customer Support

The level of support you need influences pricing. Basic email support costs less than dedicated account management or 24/7 phone support.

Standard support (typically included):

  • Email support during business hours
  • Basic knowledge base access
  • Community forum access

Premium support (additional cost):

  • 24/7 phone support
  • Dedicated account manager
  • Priority response times
  • Regular strategy sessions

A dedicated account manager typically adds $500-1,500 monthly to your email marketing pricing. Priority support packages often run $200-500 monthly extra.

klaviyo interface

Platform Choices

Your choice of email marketing platform significantly impacts your overall costs. Entry-level platforms like MailerLite might cost $50-100 monthly for basic features. Mid-tier platforms like Klaviyo or Brevo run $200-500 monthly for similar list sizes but offer more advanced features.

Enterprise platforms like Salesforce Marketing Cloud or Adobe Campaign can cost $2,000-5,000 monthly or more. These platforms offer sophisticated capabilities but require significant technical expertise to utilize fully.

Add-ons and Integrations

Additional tools for list verification, advanced analytics, or CRM integration add to your total email marketing investment.

Some add-on tools can include:

  • List verification services ($100-300 monthly)
  • Advanced analytics platforms ($200-500 monthly)
  • CRM integration tools ($100-400 monthly)
  • Landing page builders ($50-200 monthly)

While these tools add to your email marketing pricing, they often pay for themselves through improved performance and efficiency.

Specialization or Expertise of the Agency

Agency expertise commands premium pricing. General email marketing services might cost $1,000-3,000 monthly, while specialized agencies often charge $3,000-10,000 monthly or more.

Industry-specific expertise adds value through:

  • Deep understanding of industry benchmarks
  • Proven strategies for your market
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements
  • Established best practices
  • Competitive insights

For example, an e-commerce email marketing agency might charge 50-100% more than a general agency but deliver significantly better results through their specialized knowledge and proven approaches.

Common Services Offered by Email Marketing Agencies

When you’re evaluating email marketing pricing, it’s essential to understand exactly what services you’re getting for your money. Most agencies offer a core set of services that work together to create effective email marketing programs.

email design

1. Email Design

Email design services form the foundation of most agency offerings. A standard design package typically starts at $300-2,000 per template, with pricing varying based on complexity. You’ll pay more for advanced features like interactive elements or AMP for email implementation.

A standard design package includes:

  • Mobile-responsive template creation
  • Brand style guide implementation
  • Custom header and footer design
  • Content block library
  • Testing across email clients

When you’re working with an agency on design, they’ll test your templates across different email clients to ensure consistency. This testing process is particularly valuable since emails need to display correctly across dozens of different platforms and devices. Many agencies include this testing as part of their template creation service rather than charging separately for it.

2. Content Creation

Content creation represents a significant portion of ongoing email marketing costs.

Services typically include:

  • Email copywriting ($50-250 per email)
  • Subject line and preview text writing
  • Image sourcing and editing
  • Product description optimization
  • Content calendar planning

Many agencies build content creation into their monthly retainers, including a set number of email writes each month. For instance, you might get four standard promotional emails included in your base price.

Additional campaigns or specialized content like welcome series copy would then cost extra. Some agencies also handle image sourcing and editing as part of their content services, helping maintain a consistent visual style across your campaigns.

3. Analytics and Testing

Data-driven optimization sets professional email marketing apart from basic email blasts.

Analytics services include:

  • Performance reporting and analysis
  • A/B testing management
  • List segmentation analysis
  • Revenue attribution tracking
  • Deliverability monitoring

Agency analytics services typically cost between $750-2,000 monthly as part of a comprehensive package. This investment covers ongoing performance monitoring, detailed reporting, and strategic recommendations based on the data.

Your agency will track key metrics like open rates, click rates, and conversion rates. They’ll also monitor more advanced metrics like revenue per email and subscriber lifetime value. This data helps inform future campaign strategies and improvements. Many agencies also manage A/B testing programs to continuously optimize your email performance, testing elements like subject lines, send times, and content approaches.

4. Consulting and Strategy

Strategic planning helps maximize your email marketing ROI. Most agencies charge between $150-275 per hour for strategy work, though many include strategic planning in their monthly retainers.

This strategic work encompasses developing your email marketing roadmap, planning campaigns, and creating segmentation strategies that target the right messages to the right audiences.

Your agency should help you understand your audience and develop approaches that resonate with different subscriber segments.

They’ll work with you to map out customer journeys and create automated sequences that nurture leads and drive conversions. This strategic work often makes the difference between campaigns that generate real results and those that fall flat.

5. Technical and Platform Services

Technical services ensure your email program runs smoothly and effectively. Agencies typically charge $95-300 per hour for technical work, depending on the complexity of your needs.

This might include implementing your email service provider, setting up integrations with your other marketing tools, and handling template coding.

Technical services also cover setting up automation workflows and addressing deliverability issues that might arise. Many agencies include basic technical support in their monthly retainers, with more complex technical projects billed separately. This technical expertise helps ensure your emails actually reach your subscribers’ inboxes and function as intended across different platforms and devices.

email template

How Much Does an Email Template Cost?

Email template pricing reflects the complexity and functionality of your design needs.

Basic Templates:

  • Simple layout with header, body, and footer
  • Limited customization options
  • Cost: $300-500

Standard Templates:

  • Responsive design
  • Modular content blocks
  • Basic personalization capabilities
  • Cost: $500-1,000

Premium Templates:

  • Advanced personalization
  • Dynamic content zones
  • Interactive elements
  • Multiple layouts and variations
  • Cost: $1,000-2,500

Most businesses find it worthwhile to invest in a complete template library rather than creating one-off designs for each campaign. While this might cost $2,000-5,000 upfront, it often saves money long-term by reducing ongoing design needs and maintaining brand consistency.

How Much Does Bulk Email Outreach Cost?

When it comes to sending bulk emails, pricing typically follows either a CPM (Cost Per Thousand) model or monthly send-based plans. For smaller volumes under 10,000 emails, you might pay between $3-12 per thousand sends.

As your volume increases, these rates typically drop, with medium-volume senders (10,000-50,000) paying $1-5 per thousand and large-volume senders often negotiating even better rates.

Monthly send-based plans offer more predictable pricing. Small senders might pay $20-50 monthly for up to 10,000 sends, while medium-volume senders typically pay $50-150 for up to 50,000 sends. Large-volume senders sending up to 100,000 emails monthly usually pay between $150-300.

Your total cost will include more than just sending capability. You’ll need to factor in list cleaning and verification services to maintain good deliverability. Spam testing and IP warming services might also be necessary, especially if you’re sending high volumes or working with a new domain.

How Much Does an Email Newsletter Cost?

Creating effective newsletters involves several cost components working together. The design phase typically runs $500-2,000 for initial template creation, with ongoing design updates costing $100-300 per issue. This ensures your newsletter maintains a fresh, professional look while staying true to your brand guidelines.

Content creation forms another significant cost center. Professional copywriting for newsletters ranges from $150-500 per issue, depending on length and complexity.

Image creation and editing add another $50-200 per newsletter. Many businesses also invest in content planning services, which typically cost $200-500 monthly.

The production process includes setup, testing, and management costs. Each send requires careful setup and testing, typically costing $50-150. Ongoing list management runs $100-300 monthly, while performance tracking adds another $100-250 monthly to your email marketing pricing.

What Should You Expect to Invest in Email Marketing?

Your total email marketing investment scales with your business size and goals. Small businesses with revenue under $1 million typically spend $500-2,500 monthly on their entire email marketing program. This includes platform costs, agency or staff time, and any additional tools needed.

Mid-sized businesses generating $1-10 million in revenue often invest $2,500-10,000 monthly in their email programs. This higher investment allows for more sophisticated campaigns, better personalization, and more frequent sending.

Enterprise businesses with revenue over $10 million might spend $10,000 or more monthly on email marketing. At this level, you’re typically working with advanced platforms, dedicated agencies or staff, and sophisticated tools for optimization and analysis.

Most businesses allocate 5-20% of their marketing budget to email marketing. The exact percentage depends on factors like:

  • Industry and competition level
  • Customer lifetime value
  • Email program sophistication
  • Overall marketing mix
  • Available internal resources

Is It Worth Paying for Email Marketing?

Email marketing still stands out as one of the most cost-effective marketing channels available. You can check out some of our email marketing case studies to decide for yourself.

With average returns of $36-40 for every dollar spent, email marketing pricing often justifies itself through direct revenue generation. Your investment typically pays off through multiple channels, driving direct sales, improving customer retention, increasing customer lifetime value, and building stronger brand engagement.

The key lies in matching your investment level to your business size and goals. Starting with essential services lets you prove the channel’s value before scaling up to more advanced features. Many businesses begin with a basic email platform and add agency services or advanced features as their program grows and shows results.

Remember that email marketing pricing reflects more than just cost, it represents an investment in building lasting customer relationships. A well-executed email program becomes one of your most reliable marketing channels, consistently driving revenue and maintaining customer engagement.

Your email marketing investment should grow with your success. Track your results carefully, measuring both direct revenue and softer metrics like engagement and brand awareness.

This data helps justify increased investment in more sophisticated email marketing services as your program matures and proves its worth.

How We Increased Email Revenue by 921% in 30 Days

Email marketing case studies are a great way to see the impact of a marketing strategy. Let’s look at how In-box transformed Skinny Fizz’s email marketing strategy from basic to exceptional in just 30 days so you can see the potential of email marketing and its costs.

The New Zealand beverage company Skinny Fizz started in 2023 with minimal email marketing, just three automations and monthly campaigns. Their email program wasn’t capturing key customer touchpoints or maximizing revenue opportunities. That’s when they turned to In-box for help.

Our team implemented a comprehensive strategy focused on three core areas: automations, sign-up forms, and strategic campaigns. We created eight custom automation flows to communicate with customers throughout their journey.

These weren’t just generic emails, each automation was carefully crafted to align with Skinny Fizz’s brand voice and core values around health and sustainability.

To grow their audience, we implemented targeted pop-up forms that successfully increased their list size by 28% in just one month. We then developed a strategic campaign calendar delivering four targeted emails monthly to their most engaged subscribers.

The results? A staggering 921% increase in email revenue within 30 days. But that’s not all, click rates jumped by 101.49%, and placed order rates increased by 50.16%. The program delivered a 337.5% return on investment.

This transformation shows why investing in professional email marketing pays off. While email marketing pricing might seem significant upfront, the potential returns far outweigh the costs when you work with experts who understand how to optimize every aspect of your email program.
